Tips for learning German by student from Austria

Gaukhar Dzhurayeva is a 17-year-old student of Vienna State University who has been learning German for two years. Her current level is B2, which allows her to freely communicate with classmates and teachers. Gauhar shared tips for those who are going to enroll in universities abroad:

“1. Do not believe dudes who say that the language is rude! It is not true. German for me is a mixture of English and French, their speech is soft, but abrupt, and this is my second favorite pronunciation.

2. Start to study with a tutor. German grammar is difficult, but if you understand everything will be clear, the main thing is to find a person who will competently explain everything. At first, the articles will seem like hell, but later you will feel them on a subconscious level.

3. Listen and speak. It was my main problem. I read a lot and of course, it helps a lot in vocabulary, but not in speaking for sure.

4. Write and write a lot. I began with banal compositions about the seasons, about the holidays, my everyday days. These were primitive sentences, something like “The spring has come. The leaves have started to grow,” but then my essays on various topics were looking much better.

5. Watch. In the age of social networks, you can find anything. YouTube is just a storehouse for those who learn the language. I started with cartoons: “A small kingdom of ben and holly”, “Fixes”, “Smeshariki” and many other cartoons we know are on YouTube in German. Also, I subscribe to a couple of channels that explain the grammar of a language with examples.

Do not forget about the usual spoken German. I am subscribed to 10 people who have their own channels in German and talk about their lives, hobbies and so on. I started to watch them in June of that year and could not make out a word, what can we say about understanding. But closer to August, I caught myself thinking that I understood everything and in September I began to watch their videos without subtitles. The main thing is not to give up!

7. About reading. Many people learn a language without reading a book, but only with articles and small texts. I am absolutely not such a person, and usually I always begin to look for what can be read. With the study of German, I taught myself not to read books in adaptation and usually began with children’s books and fairy tales. The level is more complicated and I started with the teenage book “Timeless” which was read when I was 12. Just read “Three Comrades” of Remark is meaningless, because you will immediately be disappointed and find yourself stupid.

8. In the end, the language must be taught with motivation. I started to teach him without her, simply because I wanted to start learning a new language. Later, in the 11th grade, I learned that I could be sent to study in Austria. The study went in a different way, I had a motivation, but it concluded that I was just afraid not to understand the teachers and to fill up all sorts of exams. Fear is also motivation and it is completely normal. ”
