Nazarbayev University has witnessed the third suicide in a year and a half. A senior student jumped from the 11th floor of the student dormitory. The day before, he had posted the latest post on his Facebook account.
I: Anel, are the reasons known?
A: I do not know for sure, but I can assume that this is due to the huge training load. He studied at the 3rd or 4th year. He had a Major CS (Computer Science). And as we know, the volume of tasks there is unrealistically extensive.
I: What does the university administration say about this?
A: No one tells about it. We had a week of mourning at the university. Therefore, events were canceled, which should have been. Everyone treats this as something ordinary, because this is not the first time, but the third in a year and a half. The most annoying thing is that the media doesn’t talk about it, because it is carefully hidden, I think so. Why, for example, they write about any woman who drowned in a river, but they are silent about the fact that the third suicide happened at Nazarbayev University?
I: What do you think about it?
A: In my personal opinion, the university should change the workload for students or organize more events. Although the administration tries and psychologists often come to us, it is very difficult to schedule an appointment for them, because free places are already half a year ahead.
I: I saw you have a concert. Nazarbayev University Student Choir sang the song “Flashlight” in memory of the deceased. Why was this song chosen?
A: Yes, it was Equality talks. A member of the Ninety one band, bloggers were with their speeches. They debated about inequality and feminism. NU choir was invited to perform with Tribute to Azamat and another girl who was hit by a car. She was a graduate of Nazarbayev University. We also honored the memory of another university graduate who died of cancer. That’s why, we sang “Flashlight”. It has the following lines:
When tomorrow comes, I’ll be on my own
Feeling frightened of the things that I don’t know
I look up to the sky
And in the dark I found, lost hope that I won’t fly
And I sing along, I sing along, and I sing along
A: I hate this composition. Because NU choir performed it last year, when was the second suicide. And again they said that the causes of death are unknown, although everything was clear. “Flashlight” has become a funeral hymn for me. I’m sure that if someone commits suicide, the choir will sing the song again.
Thus, either because of the terribly heavy loads, or because of the attacks of our society, a young student has passed away. What does it mean? Our moralists need to be more loyal and tolerant to other people, which we, unfortunately, do not have.
