A monument will be erected in memory of hero of the Soviet Union, Aliya Moldagulova in Saint Petersburg.

The monument is going to be opened on May 6 in one of the city squares to the west of the 5th house on Moldagulova Street. The town planning council of the city approved the sketch of the Kazakh sculptor Edige Rakhmadiyev. It is reported that the initiative to install the monument to the girl-sniper came from the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Russian Federation. It will be installed at the expense of private funds.

In 1935, Aliya’s uncle entered the Military Transport Academy. The whole family of the Moldagulovs moved to Moscow, taking Aliya with them. A few years later they moved to Leningrad, since the Academy was transferred there. In autumn of 1939, uncle arranged 14-year-old Aliya to study at boarding school number 46. In June 1941, with the outbreak of World War II, the family of his uncle was evacuated. However, Aliya chose to stay in Leningrad.

During the Second World War she served as a sniper in the 54th separate rifle brigade of the 22nd army of the 2nd Baltic front. Aliya Moldagulova defused more than 70 enemy soldiers and officers. She died in early January 1944 during the Leningrad-Novgorod operation. According to the press service of the Administration of the Governor of St. Petersburg, this will be a sculptural composition of bronze 3 meters high, mounted on a pedestal of pink granite. The name “Aliya Moldagulova” and the invoice star of the hero are carved on the granite block. On the reverse side of the pedestal – a brief description of its exploits.

“Our decision to create the monument was based on the fact that Aliya Moldagulova was formed as a person in Leningrad. She died a heroic death, protecting our city and country at the front,” said Consul General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in St. Petersburg Bolat Imanbayev.
